CLA

Maximize Your Body's Fat Burning Potential with Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)

"A study published in the American Journal of Physiology hints that CLA could be the jack-of-all-trades among natural fat-fighters. In lab mice fed low- or high-fat diets, CLA pared down body fat, curbed appetite and boosted metabolism." -Let's Live, September 2000.

CLA is a natural fat burner without the unpleasant side effects of many diet aids now on the marker. Let's examine why and how it can benefit us.

Conventional wisdom would have us believe that only a reduced calorie diet and regular exercise can do the trick. Try as we might, achieving weight loss can be a daily struggle for many. Not only does obesity contribute to low self-esteem, it is also a public health issue. Research shows that obesity often leads to more serious complications like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Although there is no simple solution to the complexities of losing weight, a new product called CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid, has been helping many people lose excess weight and keep it off. This is particularly true if CLA is combined with exercise and diet. Let's consider some of the recent research.

What is CLA from and what is it derived?

Conjugated linoleic acid is a free fatty acid. As the name implies, it comes from the essential unsaturated fatty acid called linoleic acid. To conjugate linoleic acid involves moving double bonds in the chain so that they are separated by one carbon bond, so that the CLA molecule has double bonds at carbon atoms 9 and 11 or at 10 and 12. Linoleic acid has double bonds at 9 and 12.

CLA naturally occurs in meats and dairy products, but due to modified eating habits and changes in food production, scientists estimate that we are getting 80% less CLA in our diet than 20 years ago. First, due to health concerns we no longer choose foods rich in CLA and second, modern beef cattle are no longer raised on linoleic acid-rich grass but rather on mixture of chemically-altered grain based feeds.

How does it help weight loss?

CLA affects the way our body stores and uses energy. Research shows that CLA causes a significant increase in lean muscle mass and a decrease in body fat. The increase in lean muscle mass also contributes to a more efficient metabolism as muscle burns more calories than fat. CLA has been shown to inhibit lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme which helps to break down fats so they can be stored as fat cells. Inhibition of lipoprotein lipase slows the amount of fat that is deposited and stored in the body.

Several Human Studies

Early in 1997 a human trial on CLA was undertaken in Norway. The 90-day-double-blind trial on 20 humans showed a 20 percent decrease in body fat (average seven pounds of fat) in the group taking CLA. There was no change in the placebo group. While the CLA subjects lost very little weight, their lean muscle mass increased proportionally to the amount of fat they lost.

At a recent American Chemical Society conference, Dr. Michael Pariza presented the results from his studies on CLA. Eighty overweight people were put on a diet and exercise program. Half took 3 grams of CLA per day while the other half took a placebo. Although the weight loss was about the same in both groups, there was a significant difference in how the weight came back on after they went off the program. People given the placebo regained their weight at a ratio of 75% body fat and 25% lean muscle. Those taking the CLA supplement regained their weight at a ratio of 45% body fat and 55% lean muscle.

Dr. Pariza: "It appears that CLA works to aid leanness in several ways: It keeps little fat cells from getting big, it encourages formation of muscle and it enhances the oxidation of fat cells... This is a big difference, much more like what happens when people are doing muscle building exercises...This really leads to the idea that CLA could be useful in weight management. Our results also showed that CLA made it easier for people to stay on their diets."- Youngstown, Ohio Vindicator.

Breast cancer, asthma, cholesterol - other health benefits?

Dr. Pariza had already identified the anticarcinogenic properties of CLA in the early 1980s. Since then more than 40 studies published worldwide confirm his findings. According to Delbert R. Dorscheid, M.D., Ph.D., a cancer and asthma researcher at the University of Chicago: "There are now several reputable studies demonstrating that the incidence of breast cancer is directly proportional to the level of CLA found in body tissue. The science shows that CLA causes a decrease in tumor initiation and growth and in multiple studies; CLA reduces the activation of certain cancer causing compounds. In one clinical study (Bougnoux, Lavillonniere, Riboli, et al.) it was shown that more CLA in the tissue resulted in fewer incidences of breast cancer."

The average consumption of CLA is estimated to be between 15 and 175 milligrams daily, far below the 3000 milligrams a day that produce anticarcinogenic effects. According to Dr. Dorscheid: "As such, CLA may be an important and necessary dietary supplement for humans, as beneficial amounts cannot be obtained through diet alone."

Persons suffering from allergies and asthma may also want to include CLA in their daily diet. As an antioxidant, CLA may modulate arachidonic acid metabolism. Arachidonic acid metabolites, prostaglandins and leukotrines can cause symptoms associated with allergies and asthma. Animal studies show that CLA can help the body to naturally modify these chemicals, reducing the difficult symptoms. CLA has also been shown to reduce IgE levels, a primary cause of allergic rhinitis.

Research shows that CLA may also help to control blood sugar levels and limit the extent of atherosclerosis that can lead to hear disease.

Why Tonalin CLA?

Although there are many CLA products on the market, it is essential to use a product you can trust. Tonalin is supported by years of clinical research and contains the highest percentage of active ingredient - nearly 40% more CLA than most other commercially available CLA products. Natural Factors Tonalin CLA is derived from all-natural safflower oil. Not only does it contain the highest percentage of active ingredient, it undergoes a rigorous purification process. Any undesirable materials such as heavy metals, polymers, and volatile compounds caused by oxidized material, are filtered out.

A key tool to successful weight loss

Although it's important to reduce calories and increase exercise, CLA can be a very successful aid to permanent healthy weight loss. In addition, CLA has numerous health benefits that go far beyond weight loss. As more studies reveal, CLA can play an important role in breast cancer prevention, heart disease, asthma and allergies.

CLA Tonalin, The Slim Factor - 1000 mg, 90 Softgels - Natural Factors

CLA Tonalin by Natural Factors The nutritional supplement CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a slightly altered form of the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid. Over 200 studies have shown that CLA may play a very important role not only in weight loss, but in helping to fight cancer, diabetes, and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). In promoting weight loss double-blind studies show an increase in lean muscle mass and a decrease in percentage body fat compared to placebo group. The subjects taking CLA also reported less fatigue, dizziness and nausea than those on the placebo.

Researchers believe that CLA helps block fat cells that are in the body from filling up with fat by interfering with a fat-storing enzyme known as lipoprotein lipase as well as by increasing the sensitivity of cells to the hormone insulin. CLA is also believed to help burn fat by revving up muscle metabolism and helping increase lean muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body uses in order to function, thereby speeding up the fat burning process.

CLA is found naturally occurring in meat and dairy products when the cattle and cows consume a diet rich in grasses. Now that livestock are primarily grain fed, the CLA has virtually disappeared out of dairy products and the meat we consume. As a result, we may be increasing our risk for obesity, heart disease, and even cancer.

All Natural Factors products are manufactured according to Canadian Health Protection Branch Good Manufacturing (GMP), among the highest standards in the world.
