    Diabetes and Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance is a condition that increases your risk of developing diabetes and/or heart disease. Very few people actually know when they have this condition. After eating, food is broken down into glucose (sugar) which is the body’s main source of energy. But cells need insulin to help convert the glucose to energy. When the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body is unable to use it, the cells can not use the glucose, leaving it in the bloodstream. This makes your body a target for diabetes. Insulin resistance often happens to people who are obese or overweight. Too much fat tissue can make your body resistant to insulin. Many have all or some of the symptoms known as the Metabolic Syndrome- high bad (LDL) blood cholesterol levels, low good (HDL) cholesterol levels, high triglycerides and high blood pressure. Regular exercise and a healthy eating program set out by your doctor can help reverse this and stop you from developing diabetes.
